So today’s topic may be a little TMI for some readers but I felt it was important enough to write about, and bring the awareness level up on this matter. Im sharing this with you all today because I spent years trying to figure out what was happening to my face and body! Let’s start from the beginning:
I’ve always been blessed to have very wonderful skin. I never suffered from any acne as a teen, through adulthood. My skin was always naturally very hydrated….never dry and flakey or too oily. Of course, I always used great skincare products through my teens and 20’s but my skin was naturally pretty great on it’s own.
About two years ago, I started getting acne and small little bumps throughout my face. It was minor at first, but quite alarming because I had never experienced anything like it before. At the time, I was working full time as an artist at MAC Cosmetics and figured because I was wearing tons of makeup every single day, my skin was having a reaction to all of the product I was wearing. I started getting regular facials and kicking up my skincare a bit, but the problem continued to get worse.
When I went in for facials, my skin therapist would extract as much as she could but most of the acne was under the surface, and not ready to extract. We tried high frequency, masks, treatments…you name it, I did it. As an Esthetician myself, I just could not figure out what was going on with my skin. It was a condition I’ve never seen before and it was getting progressively worse with each growing week. My Dermatologist had said it was adult acne induced by stress (I was planning my wedding during this entire time frame) I had very low stress planning the big day (until the month of the wedding) and it truly did not resemble any type of acne….so I just knew that wasn’t it. To make a long story short, about 3 months before my wedding….I was desperate. Every bride to be dreams of walking down the aisle with a flawless, glowing complexion, the pressure was on to find a cure to this mystery condition!
I googled every possible skin condition known to man, and was finding nothing, except for one thing that caught my eye. It was a video some random man had posted on a “Candida Awareness” website. I was intrigued and decided to watch.10 minutes later I was in my car driving to the closest Whole Foods in search of the cure I had been waiting for. You see, this video was all about this man who suffered from the same skin conditions I had. Small bumps all over his face under the skin’s surface, skin rashes and itchiness, I was also experiencing low energy and digestive problems which was exactly what he had described. The problem: Candida!!!!!!!!
Candida is basically an overgrowth of yeast in the body. The two leading contributors are a diet high in sugar and refined foods and the overuse of antibiotics. You can experience this outbreak orally, vaginally (which neither one I had experienced) or in the intenstinally (which is exactly what I had and is the worst to identify seeing as it’s more hidden than the other two) I wont go into great detail of the condition, if your interested in learning more than I encourage you to go here: http://www.holistichelp.net/candida.html
It has several different symptoms, one of which is an outbreak of rashes or acne on the skin. I immediately began the recommended diet and started with a holistic treatment. Within 2 weeks of me beginning this regimen, I started to physically feel much better and my skin was clearing up as well. After my wedding, I fell off the wagon a bit with my treatments and diet and started to get the acne and skin rashes again, so I recently began a “clean diet” and taking the supplement “ThreeLac” which I have found great success with. My skin has truly done a 180, and is finally getting back to what it was before all of this mess.
I share this with you because Candida is a very hidden epidemic and several people have suffered from it. I cannot tell you how many clients I have worked on myself who have had the identical symptoms as me. It’s very difficult to diagnose and very difficult to get rid of in your body but by following a clean diet and taking the necessary supplements over time you can overcome it. I never knew anything about this until I went through it and figured this blog is a great tool to get the word out there. If you experience any of the symptoms listed in the website I’ve given you above speak with your doctor (holistic preferred…..most regular doctors do not support treatment or even diagnosis of this) or an easy trick you can do at home to see if you may have a yeast overgrowth is:
Spit into a clear cup filled with water first thing in the morning before you eat anything, wait about 10 minutes and check the saliva. If the saliva is clear colored and floating at the top of the glass…you’re just fine. But if the saliva has made it’s way to the bottom of the glass, with a “spider like” look to it (meaning, threads of saliva are separating and going to the bottom of the glass) than there’s a likely chance you have Candida. This is gross…..i know, but very helpful.
Not the most glamorous post, but something I felt needed to be put out there. Acne and other skin conditions can be stressful, especially when treatments are not helping. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms I have described, look into it my friends!!!
